Opta’s supercomputer has revised its Premier League title predictions for Manchester City and Liverpool after both clubs opened the 2026/27 season with contrasting results on matchday one.
City came from behind to claim all three points, while Liverpool had to settle for a last-gasp draw. The outcomes were notable not only for the results themselves but because both clubs were operating under new management for the first time in years.

Enzo Maresca has taken charge at Manchester City following Pep Guardiola’s departure, while Andoni Iraola stepped in at Liverpool after Arne Slot was sacked.
The two coaches faced an immediate test in their opening fixtures, with the results producing very different moods in each camp.

Following those performances, Opta’s data platform, The Analyst, updated its model for the full Premier League table. City’s chances of winning the title rose from 18% to nearly 22%, while Liverpool’s dropped from just under 10% to 8%.
Further down the projected standings, Chelsea benefited from results elsewhere on matchday one. Manchester United and Aston Villa both suffered defeats, which pushed the Blues up from a predicted sixth-place finish to fourth in the updated rankings.
Chelsea are yet to complete their opening fixture, with the club travelling to Craven Cottage to face Fulham in a west London derby that will close out matchday one.
The revised supercomputer standings reflect how quickly early results can shift the projected picture, even at the very start of a new campaign.
