The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached Blessing Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency 1, eight days after a controversy over his status as Speaker first erupted.
The motion for impeachment was moved during Monday’s plenary by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, the lawmaker representing Etsako Central.

New Speaker clarifies Agbebaku’s exit
The Punch reported that Yekini Idaiye, who represents Akoko-Edo 1 and was elected as the new Speaker in Agbebaku’s place, made clear that the former Speaker did not leave office voluntarily.
Idaiye said:
“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku.”
He explained that the House converted Agbebaku’s indefinite suspension into a full impeachment because a formal resignation letter had never been officially submitted or documented, despite earlier reports on August 17, 2026, that Agbebaku had resigned his position. Idaiye added that the impeachment notice was backed by 17 members of the House.
Order to return government property
During the same plenary session, the new Speaker directed Agbebaku to return all government property currently in his possession. Idaiye warned that the House would involve security agencies if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive.
The development marks a firm conclusion to a dispute that began more than a week ago, with the House now taking the position that impeachment, not resignation, is the official record of how Agbebaku’s tenure ended.
