The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians planning trips to the US, cautioning visa applicants against submitting forged documents or misleading information during the application process.

The warning comes as part of the mission’s ongoing #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign, which seeks to educate applicants on the US visa process and help them avoid mistakes that could jeopardise their travel plans.

US mission in Nigeria discloses what happens when fraud is found in visa applications

According to the US Mission, submitting fraudulent documents is not treated as a minor error that simply leads to a rejected visa application.

The mission said consular officers who detect forged documents or uncover information suggesting that an applicant may pose a security concern can alert relevant US government agencies.

“When consular officers detect fraudulent documents in a visa application or uncover information suggesting an individual may be a potential threat, we immediately alert all appropriate U.S. government agencies,” the mission said in a post on its official X account.

It added that such coordination is aimed at protecting national security and keeping criminals and other potential bad actors out of the country.

The warning means applicants could face consequences that extend beyond losing the visa application fee or having an application refused.

Bank statements, employment records under watch

Nigerians applying for US tourist, business, student or immigrant visas are expected to provide information and supporting documents that accurately reflect their circumstances.

Documents commonly submitted as part of visa applications may include bank statements, employment letters, academic records, travel history and other evidence supporting the purpose of the proposed trip.

Any information contained in these documents should be genuine, accurate and verifiable.

Applicants who deliberately submit fabricated financial records, employment information or other evidence could place future visa applications at risk, particularly if inconsistencies or fraudulent claims are uncovered during screening.

US urges applicants to stay truthful

The US Mission has repeatedly encouraged prospective travellers to approach the visa process with honesty and provide authentic documentation.

The latest warning reinforces the importance of carefully reviewing applications before submission and ensuring that every claim can be supported with legitimate evidence.

For Nigerians dreaming of visiting the US for holidays, education, business or family-related reasons, the message is clear: attempting to strengthen an application with fake documents could instead turn a travel opportunity into a much bigger problem.

As the #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign continues, applicants are being urged to understand the requirements, provide truthful information and avoid shortcuts that could jeopardise both their current application and future travel prospects.
