LASU Graduate Sets New Department Record
Mohammed Eniola Eletu is a recent graduate of Lagos State University (LASU) who made a name for himself and set a record in his department.
In this exclusive interview, Mohammed Eniola shared with Legit.ng how he broke a record in his department.
I graduated from LASU with 4.85 CGPA
Recently, many individuals graduated from Lagos State University with good results. Some even went as far as getting rewarded for their academic feat by the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Among those who recorded a high CGPA at Lagos State University is Mohammed Eniola Eletu.
He told Legit.ng he emerged as the best graduating student from the Department of Mass Communication.
Speaking about this achievement, he told Legit.ng:
“I recently graduated as the Best Graduating Student (BGS) from the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, at Lagos State University (LASU) combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremony, for the 2025/2026 academic session.”
“I graduated with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.85, surpassing the BGS of the 2024/2025 academic session from the department, who also graduated with a CGPA of 4.81 at the combined convocation ceremony.”
LASU graduate: Mohammed breaks department record
Having spoken about the CGPA he finished with, he spoke deeply on what finishing with such a grade helped him achieve in his department.
Since the Department of Mass Communication was formed, Mohammed explained that there had been individuals with impressive grades, and the highest before his graduation from the department was 4.73.
However, he broke the record as he finished his studies in the Mass Communication department with a higher CGPA, which put him ahead and allowed him to set a new record in the department.
Speaking about this, Mohammed told Legit.ng:
“I have officially set the record for the highest CGPA ever produced by a BGS in the history of the department since the historic “first-class jinx” was first broken by a student named Mariam Ogboye, with a CGPA of 4.73 at the past 25th convocation ceremony.”
Speaking about other awards he won at the faculty, he added:
“Alongside this historic academic feat, I was also honoured with the award for the Best Indigenous Student in the faculty, celebrating my roots as a Lagos State indigene.”

LASU graduate speaks about his course
There are several other courses which Mohammed Eniola Eletu could have studied at the university instead of Mass Communication, yet he chose the discipline and finished with first class and a strong CGPA.
He told Legit.ng what inspired him to study the course at the university.
Mohammed Eniola shared:
“I remember back in secondary school when a teacher asked what I’d like to become in future, which I responded to by saying a journalist. I remember her saying I made the right choice, as I was considered a talkative in class, which I slightly disagree on. I wasn’t really a talkative, as secrets never slipped from my lips. I was just expressive.”

“Although after graduation and as a few years passed, I found myself becoming passionate about the Nigerian Army, and so in 2022 I applied for the NDA 74RC course, and didn’t make the AFSB shortlist. Thus, I did a change of institution to Lagos State University to study Mass Communication.”
His dream for journalism and his desire to express himself inspired him to study a course that could help make that dream a reality, as he advised that goal several years later.
LASU graduate recalls challenges he faced
Just like many people, the experience of Mohammed Eniola Eletu is not very different, as he told Legit.ng he faced challenges relating to jobs and some skills, as he wasn’t able to afford some bills.
Due to financial constraints or limitations, he wasn’t able to afford a hostel fee, as he had to go from home to school, and this affected him mentally in most cases.
He shared:
“As a student, with no job or technical skills, apart from the experience I gathered back as a junior teacher in a school in my area. Funding and coping with a hostile home was my biggest challenge, as my parents couldn’t afford the hostel bills. I always came to school from home, which was mentally draining and very stressful as it was quite far. These two factors impacted my feeding, dressing and participation in extracurricular activities in school. This challenge was further coupled with some academic courses that seemed too big to handle.”
Despite the financial challenge, he was still able to pay his school fees, achieve good academic results, and break a record in his department.
Despite the challenges, Mohammed Eniola Eletu never failed a course. He spoke about this in a brief chat with Legit.ng.
I didn’t fail a course: LASU graduate says
Mohammed Eniola Eletu, despite not failing a course throughout his undergraduate studies at the university, spoke about an experience he might never forget- something that happened in his 200 level and affected his chances of emerging as the overall best graduating student of the university.
He told Legit.ng:
“I didn’t fail a course, but I’ll say I had failed to become the overall best graduating student of the University due to me falling from a CGPA of 4.95 in 100 level to a 4.85 in 200 level, where I got my first and only C in a course as a student. I offered a total of 86 courses as an undergraduate student of LASU and I got 75 As, 10 Bs and 1 C.”

How I graduated with an outstanding result

Mohammed did this each semester, and eventually, his hard work paid off as he finished his studies with a CGPA of 4.85 and made a name for himself in his department.
He shared his strategy with Legit.ng:
“Once a teacher who regularly wrote lesson notes, I carried a bit of that cultural practice into the university. I usually planned the courses I was going to offer, making early research and gathering resource materials in the form of e-books (PDF), past questions, etc., before the lecturer shares his/her materials.”
“This I usually do early into the semester. I then collate them for ease of reference and begin studying them at intervals. Preparation helps me be ahead of the class. It also saves me in situations where there are back-to-back exams with no break for reading. As they say, ‘those who fail to prepare, prepare to fail.'”
My advice to Mass Communication students
Mohammed Eniola Eletu shared important advice for Nigerian students on the importance of skill acquisition and how it could add value to their lives and help generate income.
He said:
“My advice to students studying Mass Communication in today’s era is to learn skills that support the discipline, public speaking, art design, photography, video and audio editing and many more of the related technical communication skills. It gives you an edge over your peers and makes it easier to kickstart and manage small initiatives on your own. I wish I was able to learn them earlier, as I intend to do so soon.”

LASU graduate overcomes JAMB setback
Meanwhile, Legit.ng recently reported that a LASU Computer Science graduate who wrote JAMB twice before gaining admission graduated with a Second Class Upper and a 4.37 CGPA.
The graduate also shared several achievements from his time at the university, including serving as a Lagos State Youth Ambassador and winning Best Debater at the LASU Debate Society.
