- The UAE government announced the fines citizens face for failing to enlist in the national military without a valid reason
- Citizens who do not join the UAE army could face a jail term, a financial penalty, or both under the country’s military service rules
- Only UAE nationals are eligible to join the Emirati military, making the rules applicable exclusively to citizens of the country
The United Arab Emirates has set out the financial penalties and prison terms that await citizens who skip mandatory military service without a legitimate excuse.
According to information published on the UAE government’s official platform, nationals who fail to enlist in the Emirati military before they turn 29 years old risk serious legal consequences. The penalties apply strictly to UAE citizens, as military service in the country is open only to nationals and not to foreign residents.

UAE fine for skipping military service
Citizens found to have avoided enlistment without an acceptable reason face a jail sentence ranging from one month to one year, a financial fine, or a combination of both punishments.
The official government information states:
“Citizens who fail to enlist for military service without valid reason until they reach 29 years of age will face a jail term of one month to one year, or a fine ranging between AED 10,000 and AED 50,000 or both.”
In naira terms, the minimum fine is AED 10,000 (N3,663,267), while the maximum penalty is AED 50,000 (N18,316,338).
What UAE nationals need to know
The rules make clear that a valid reason is required for any citizen who does not enlist, though the government did not specify in the published information what qualifies as an acceptable exemption. Citizens without such justification remain liable to prosecution regardless of age, provided they have not yet reached 29.
The announcement serves as a reminder that military service carries formal legal obligations for Emirati nationals, with penalties significant enough to act as a strong deterrent against non-compliance.
UAE reveals exception from compulsory military service
