The Aliko Dangote Foundation has pledged ₦600 million towards the construction of a female students’ hostel at Lagos State University (LASU), with the Dangote Group also offering preferential employment to first-class graduates in Engineering and Sciences from the institution’s most recent graduating classes.
The announcement came during LASU’s combined 29th and 30th Convocation Ceremonies, where Hajia Fatima Aliko Dangote represented her father, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who was absent but was honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Business (Honoris Causa) in Entrepreneurship, Industrial and Human Capital Development.

She told the gathering that first-class graduates in Engineering and Sciences would receive priority consideration for roles within the Dangote Group after completing their National Youth Service Corps programme.

The Dangote Group currently employs over 52,000 people across Nigeria and 11 other African countries. The Foundation also runs a scholarship programme and has announced plans to invest $70 million annually over the next decade in secondary and tertiary education, teacher training, and STEM and vocational programmes.
Sanwo-Olu rewards academic excellence
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu donated ₦20 million each to the best graduating students of the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions. In his final convocation address as Visitor to LASU, he congratulated the 20,604 graduates produced across the two sessions, which included 494 students who finished with first-class honours.
Among those singled out were Lawal Ayilara of the Department of Project Management, who graduated with a 4.96 cumulative grade point average, and Samuel Oluolamide Adebanjo of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, who recorded a 4.97 CGPA.
Sanwo-Olu also reflected on his administration’s investment in LASU, citing the construction of a library complex, new lecture theatres, student accommodation, and over 50 infrastructure projects. Student accommodation capacity at the university has grown to 8,000 beds.
He also noted the expansion of the state’s university system from one institution to three, with a fourth proposed, and said pioneer students of the new university of education benefited from a 65 per cent tuition reduction.

LASU records major academic and financial growth
Outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, said she was leaving behind a university of “proven excellence,” noting that the institution’s internally generated revenue rose from ₦3 billion in September 2021 to ₦13 billion by September 2025 during her five-year tenure.
The Chancellor, His Royal Majesty Oba Dr Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Telade IV, highlighted LASU’s selection as the sole South-West beneficiary of a ₦3 billion TETFund Grant for a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences.
The Pro-Chancellor, Mr Babatunde Ogala, SAN, OFR, disclosed a new strategic partnership with the University of Illinois in Chicago covering student exchanges, lecturer collaboration, and joint research.
Also honoured at the ceremony were Mr Akin Kekere-Ekun, OFR, and Mrs Harriet-Ann Omobolanle Adesola, both of whom received honorary doctorate degrees. The Epe Campus hosted a convocation ceremony for the first time in the university’s history, with graduates from Engineering and Agricultural Sciences.
LASU graduate bags Law degree, shares achievements
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a LASU graduate had highlighted his achievements after bagging a Law degree.
He noted that he went from carrying law textbooks to carrying the law graduate title. He stated that completing his undergraduate studies at LASU marks the end of an important chapter in his life.
